Citation checks

# How Vakilat checks each answer

Last updated 27 October 2026

Each statement in a Vakilat answer cites a Supreme Court judgment and quotes the paragraph it rests on. Before you see the answer, ordinary code looks for every citation in the stored judgment and matches every quotation word for word, and a second AI model reads each statement against its paragraphs. A statement that fails is taken out or set apart with its reason, so you know what to read before you rely on it.

## The checks, one by one

- Citation found in the stored judgment, at this paragraph Ordinary code, no AI The judgment cited is one of the Supreme Court judgments Vakilat holds, and the paragraph shown comes from that judgment. It does not tell you whether the judgment is still good law.
- Quotation matches the source text word for word Ordinary code, no AI Every quoted word appears, in the same order, in that paragraph of the Court's text. A quotation can be exact and still be read out of context, so read the paragraph.
- Support for the statement: reviewed by a model, not proof A second AI model A separate model reads the statement against the cited paragraphs and says whether they support it, go less far, or say otherwise. The app marks it as a model's review rather than proof, so read the paragraph yourself.
- Coverage: Supreme Court judgments held through a date The corpus record The date up to which Vakilat holds Supreme Court judgments when the answer was written. Later treatment may not be complete, and High Courts are not covered yet.

## What you see in an answer

- “N statements checked against the official text”: the statements kept in the answer, each with a citation found and a quotation matched.
- “N removed for failing a check”: statements whose citation or quotation did not match are taken out of the answer, and only their number is shown.
- “Not verified”: statements the second model doubts stay in the answer, set apart in a box that asks you to check them against the judgments, with no citation and one of these reasons: - No passage read supports this
- The judgments read do not support this
- This goes further than the judgment says
- The judgment read says otherwise
- “Judgments held through” a date, and “Limits of this answer”, which says what the research did not cover.

The citation report lists every statement kept in the answer with the paragraph it rests on, the quoted words marked inside it, where it sits in the judgment, and a link to the Court's copy. Older judgments often have no paragraph numbers in the Court's text, so the report gives the page instead.

## A real example

The question “Is a dying declaration enough to convict without corroboration?” was asked on 14 October 2026 from a demonstration account. The answer kept 5 checked statements and set one apart. Two of the checked statements and the one set apart are shown here as the app showed them. The example is a demonstration and is not legal advice.

Kushal Rao v. The State of Bombay, decided 25 September 1957, unnumbered paragraph, page 10. [Court's copy](https://api.sci.gov.in/jonew/judis/609.pdf)

Atbir v. Govt. of N.C.T. of Delhi, decided 9 August 2010, unnumbered paragraph, page 15. [Court's copy](https://api.sci.gov.in/jonew/judis/36676.pdf)

Reason shown: This goes further than the judgment says.

## What the checks cannot tell you

- Whether a later or larger bench has overruled or narrowed a judgment. A judgment page lists the later judgments in Vakilat that cite it. That tells you where to read; how each one treated it, you read for yourself.
- Anything about High Court or tribunal decisions, which Vakilat does not hold yet.
- Whether the authority fits your facts. The checks test the answer against the judgments; only you can test it against your matter.
